Fletcher, a reporter for The New York Times, is also a contact for Pedro Nunyes and Thomas Herara, who are planning a revolution in an unnamed South American country. Fletcher's sister and other nuns had been murdered in the country some years earlier. Captured by the government, Fletcher is taken to a basement and interrogated by the chief minister of information, Escobar and his associates. There seems no hope of escape from torture and, ultimately, death.

Genesis: King says he wanted to write one of those "Kafka-esque" stories of South American interrogations, but one for which there was "a happier ending, however unreal that might be."

Movie: Two Dollar Baby films with the same title as the story have been produced, in 2009 and 2010.

Stage: Adapted as part of The Blood Brothers Present ... The Master of Horror at the Gene Frankel Theatre in New York in 2008. The entire presentation also included adaptations of "In the Deathroorn" and "Quitters, Inc.," along with vignettes from "Survivor Type" and "Paranoid: A Chant."

Graphic: An illustrated version is slated to appear in Secretary of Dreams (Volume Two) (Cemetery Dance), drawn by Maine artist Glenn Chadbourne.

In-World

In-World is part of Roland Deschain's planet, All-World, in The Dark Tower cycle. The term appears only rarely in the cycle and appears to cover the "Inner Baronies" such as New Canaan, of which Gilead was the capital.

In the Key-Chords of Dawn

This 18-line poem was published without a title in a literary magazine Onan in 1971. Even though untitled, it is referred to by the King community as "In the Key-chords of Dawn." It has never been included it in one of King's books but can be found in a collection of horror poems, The Devil's Wine (Cemetery Dance) 2003).

Two people fishing realize that the pastime involves more than just eating the fish and it, like life, contains other responsibilities and complexities.

Insomnia

Although one of King's major novels, in which he introduces mythology and characters that prove important in other tales, including The Dark Tower cycle (for instance) the first mention of The Crimson King), it lacks the sort of characters and storyline that remain long in the memory of readers. It is for the Dark Tower links that it is likely to hold its greatest long-term interest. King won the British Fantasy Award for the book.

Set in Derry, Maine, the novel is strongly linked to It and other Maine stories. For instance, the Juniper Hill asylum appears in many other tales, including Bag of Bones and Needful Things. An important reference is made to Gage Creed (Pet Sematary).

Elderly Ralph Roberts suffers a bout of insomnia and pretty soon he is almost constantly awake. Ralph and his friend Lois Chasse begin to see strange "bald doctors" as well as auras around people. They notice that whenever the bald doctors cut a string at the top of an aura the person dies soon afterwards. Derry is a town in which people die naturally, and unnaturally, and dangers are all around.
